Forget Supermarkets; The Best Car Adverts Ever

Car advice and help from Logbook Loans…

So the annual battle is on between all the different TV Christmas ads.

Whether you are a fan of John Lewis’s Excitable Edgar or Sainsbury’s chimney sweep Nicholas, the Argos Book of Dreams or M&S’s Go Jumpers shoulder roll, or the many others currently gracing our screens, these ads certainly get us talking. Which is exactly what they’re supposed to do – and will no doubt subtly influence many people to shop at those stores.

But at Logbook Loans our passion is for cars, and all the fuss about the Christmas ads got us thinking about the greatest car ads of all times. Believe us, this is also a topic to really get people talking! We have eventually managed to come up with the following list of five of the best car adverts ….. But see if you agree?

Audi

Audi always seem to produce brilliant ads and it is difficult to choose a favourite. But we reckon it has to be the Godfather ad for their R8, in which the gangster wakes up not with a horse’s head in his bed, but the front of an old car. Outside, of course, is a brand new Audi.

Having said that, a close second would be the one featuring a retired astronaut in which a new Audi helps him to relive his exciting space days.

Mercedes

This Magic Body Control ad is ridiculous but certainly caught everyone’s attention! It features magic chickens who are able to dance and jiggle their bodies without moving their heads.

<iframe width=”560″ height=”315″ src=”https://www.youtube.com/embed/nLwML2PagbY” frameborder=”0″ allow=”accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture” allowfullscreen></iframe>

The ad itself has nothing really to do with either cars or the Mercedes brand but always raises a smile.

Jaguar

This ad for the Jaguar F-type coupe was premiered during the US Superbowl of 2014, and then extended to screens in the UK as well.

<iframe width=”560″ height=”315″ src=”https://www.youtube.com/embed/2Bls1KKDwmo” frameborder=”0″ allow=”accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture” allowfullscreen></iframe>

Its theme was British villains and featured Tom Hiddleston, Ben Kingsley and Mark Strong uniting as iconic British screen villains, against the backdrop of the Jaguar speeding around well-known London landmarks.

Skoda

This “cake” advert for the Skoda Fabia proved to be very popular. Set to the background music of My Favourite Things from The Sound of Music, it showed a life-sized Skoda Fabia being created out of cake.

<iframe width=”560″ height=”315″ src=”https://www.youtube.com/embed/NwBE1l6QexU” frameborder=”0″ allow=”accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture” allowfullscreen></iframe>

What many viewers did not realise is that the production was real and a huge cake was actually created in Shepperton Studios. The original aim was to donate it to local charities and hospitals, but after spending four days in the studio, it was judged to be safer to donate it to the East London Community Recycling Project in Clapham for composting.

Ford

Ford’s ‘Ice Ice Baby’ ad for its Fiesta was memorable not just for the fun story but the music (by Vanilla Ice) which became an annoying earworm when the ad was released early in 2015.

<iframe width=”560″ height=”315″ src=”https://www.youtube.com/embed/yaYCTk6_AQw” frameborder=”0″ allow=”accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture” allowfullscreen></iframe>

The ad features two bemused drivers witnessing a variety of different attempts to de-ice a car – including scrapers, hairdryers, axes and blowtorches – all of which are then eclipsed by a demonstration of the de-icing properties of a Fiesta’s heating system.

So, these are five of our favourite car ads but there are many others – and we look forward to seeing new advertisements that come out in 2020.
